How does Botox Cosmetic work?

Botox is made from a chemical compound called a neurotoxin that is made by the bacteria clostridium botulinum. When used appropriately, this neurotoxin causes the muscles to relax and smoothes out wrinkles at the same time. Botox is given by injection–yes–with a needle in specific muscles of the face.

Sometimes patients worry that the injections will freeze their face, making them look stiff and unnatural. But there’s no need to worry. When Botox cosmetic is administered by a trained professional, you’ll look natural. And it’s quick too–you can come in for treatment and be back to work within the hour.

How long does Botox cosmetic last?

The results of your Botox cosmetic injections can last several weeks. Everyone is different and results may vary slightly, but you can expect to see good results within a week of your injection and almost 3/4 of patients were still sporting their wrinkle-free skin 30 days or more after the procedure.

What are the risks and side effects?

As with any injection, you may expect pain at the injection site, redness or a little swelling. Eyelid drooping and swelling may also occur. For some people, side effects may also include dry mouth, tiredness, headache, neck pain or eye problems like blurry or double vision. Of course these symptoms don’t happen for everyone, so talk to Dr. Hessel about your risk when you come in for your injection.
